The Sydney African Film Festival was launched in 2006 by a group of volunteers from Hands of Help with the initial goal of raising money for their project in Uganda. During the planning process the group realised that there was a lack of African films showing in Australia and that there was not an event that celebrated many different cultures from the African Continent. Last year, the festival continued to grow and with the support of its sponsor, Imaginative Traveller.
With the support of the New York African Film Festival, and a continual dedicated group of volunteers from Hands of Help, the festival has been able to achieve its goal of providing an African voice here in Sydney through film and culture. This year, a dedicated group of Hands of Help volunteers will once again be working behind the scenes to bring the beauty, tragedy and amazing spirit of Africa to the Chauvel in Sydney. The expansion of the African Film Festival to Melbourne highlights the necessity for celebration of African culture in a multicultural society and provides the attendees a chance to help support communities in Kenya and Uganda.
This year the Sydney African Film Festival will be held from the 26th - 28th of September at the Chauvel in Paddington. In Melbourne the festival will run from 3rd - 5th of October. The festival will showcase a number of highly acclaimed African feature films never before released in Australia and a unique collection of African short films.
Any one who attends the festival will be helping Hands of Help achieve the goal of building equality in communities in Uganda and Kenya will ALL money raised from the festival going directly to the projects.
